Binding Threads explores the relationship between individuals, their community and the landscapes they inhabit. It turns a lens on the culture and community that has shaped the artist, and the places that have shaped her local community as a whole. The bars, pubs and music venues these people inhabit become as much of the subject of her images as the individuals captured, as she focuses on the interaction between people and place.
Communities depend on spaces as cultural hubs for music, art, connection and celebration, acting as the catalyst of how communities interact, forming connections with physical landscapes and one other; creating threads that link individuals. As these unique spaces increasingly get lost to new commercial infrastructure, the community thrives not just by creating DIY, makeshift sites, but by using friends as homing beacons, rooting themselves not just in physical spaces, but in one another.
Binding Threads is a patchwork self portrait of Wollongong’s urban culture; a celebration and commemoration of its resilience through a constantly shifting physical landscape.
