I Know A Place explores the relationship between young Wollongong individuals, their wider community, and the local landscapes they gather in, affirming the importance of the ‘Third Place’ – communal hubs of social connection separate from the home and workspace. It focuses on the interaction and intersection of people and place as locals form ties with these sites as deep as ones with one another.
Communities rely on third spaces to facilitate connection, celebration and creativity – these locations acting as the catalysts in how we collectively interact.
Assembled from snapshot photographs taken over several years, I Know A Place aims to preserve this time in Wollongong’s history from a firsthand perspective, forming a portrait of the city – focusing particular attention on our local music scene, which has continued to thrive for decades through our community’s resilience in the face of an ever shifting landscape.
The work strives to offer insight into shared local experiences, presenting intimate, personal glimpses into Wollongong’s subculture as well as spotlighting experiences and emotions collectively undertaken and understood throughout generations.
I Know a Place provides an incentive to reflect on and celebrate the vital third spaces of our city, and highlights how these sites foster our community in seeking belonging and creating connection across ages.
